Learning System PRs take a few days to get included in Fruit Jam OS releases

I checked adafruit/Adafruit_Learning_System_Guides#3095 and it appears to have been merged "two days ago" (8/2/25) and the latest release of Fruit Jam OS (1.0.1) says it came out yesterday (8/3/25) however the new minesweeper icon isn't in the release files.

I manually used the build.py to build the files from github and the icon is there.

Yeah, that is weird. It looks like the new release was built after the learn repo PR was merged, so those things should have been included based on my understanding, but they're definitely missing 🫠.

It's also odd to me that the daily release check for today didn't catch that and make another new release, especially if manually running build.py is resulting in getting the new files.

I'll try to check in on it after the next build is released, and if they're still missing I'll troubleshoot further to try to figure out if the code that checks whether a new release is needed has a bug.

I went ahead and made a new release manually https://github.com/adafruit/Fruit-Jam-OS/releases/tag/1.0.2

It does have minesweeper icon and metadata files included now. I'm not sure why they got omitted in the prior release. We'll see if we have the same issue crop up again.

I think all the PRs I have had merged into the Learning System made it into the 1.0.4 release. It seems to have taken a few days from when the learning system merge happened before the Fruit Jam release included them but that may be fine.

I am not sure of the exact cause of this. My best guess is that the build is using cached copies of the bundles that it downloads from the learn CDN. It's unclear to me whether the cached ones are served from the CDN itself, or some other mechanism like something automatic within workflows that caches downloads perhaps?

The URLs have a timestamp field that gets filled in which I think may have been intended to make sure that up-to-date ones are fetched, but it seems not to work https://github.com/adafruit/Fruit-Jam-OS/blob/main/build.py#L13-L23

I think the easiest path forward is to refactor the build script to clone the learn guide repo and then copy code out of the local clone rather than relying on the live learn bundler system. A few things that will be involved in that changeover that come to mind are:

• The list of apps will hold relative paths within the learn repo instead of full URLs
• During building we will need to use circup to install the requirements for the apps that come from learn repo. Currently this uses the ones from in the downloaded bundles. The builtin_apps already use this technique with circup though, so it should be easy to apply the same thing to the apps that come from learn repo.

I will try to work on it this week, but not sure which day it will land on.

I think #53 should resolve this. We can re-open this issue though if we still end up seeing release asset builds that are behind after updates are merged to the Learn repo.
