Cannot configure Remote GitHub MCP Server in ChatGPT (OAuth discovery error)

Summary

Attempting to add the remote GitHub MCP server as a custom connector in ChatGPT fails during OAuth setup with the message: “Error fetching OAuth configuration.”

Per the README, the remote server URL is https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/, and OAuth is listed as supported for compatible MCP hosts. ChatGPT appears unable to complete OAuth discovery/handshake.

Steps to Reproduce

1. In ChatGPT (Plus/Pro or higher):
2. Go to Settings → Connectors → Create.
3. Enter a name and set MCP Server URL to: https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/
4. Leave Authentication as OAuth.
5. Check “I trust this application.”
6. Click Create.

Expected

The GitHub MCP server is added and becomes available as a connector (OAuth flow completes).

Actual

ChatGPT shows “Error fetching OAuth configuration.” The connector is not created.

Hi 👋 GitHub currently does not support Dynamic Client Registration, that's why adding MCP this way won't work. Chat GPT has a separate integration with GitHub API, I suggest you try that:

Have you tried a proxy server between ChatGPT and Github Remote MCP? I've having the same issue.

OAuth in ChatGPT seems to work now, but organization project access doesn't seem to work. #1325

I can confirm as well - I've been able to add a new app in ChatGPT which works, using all of the possibilities which are relevant to what I was trying to do:

• https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/x/all/
• https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/x/all/readonly/

I can also confirm that the OAuth app doesn't have project access, despite the "all" endpoints capabilities saying it can theoretically do project stuff. I haven't tested every other endpoint, but it might be worth doing some testing to ensure that the GitHub app backing that server has permissions to do the other stuff too. :)
