Custom encoding when writing DataArray to zarr

I know the to_zarr accepts an encoding parameter, but I can't figure out how to use it to encode an object array containing lists of ints. Thanks.

import numpy as np

data = xr.DataArray(
    dims=["x", "y"],
    data=np.zeros((2, 2)),
    coords={"x": [1, 2], "y": [1, 2],
            "foo": ("y", np.array([[1], [2, 3]], dtype=object))},
