Google Summer of Code 2016

This page hosts the ideas for Google Summer of Code 2016! You can add your ideas and improve others. If you're a student, perhaps something on this list will interest you!

You can discuss the ideas posted here in our mailing list mailing list. Don't hesitate to send your original ideas as well!

Here's some ideas to get you started:

Web Console UX

Remember the first time you saw the console and you hit the TAB key to trigger autocompletion? Nope, autocompletion it never worked. We can fix that, by introducing autocompletion and focusing on a better user experience for the Web Console as a whole.

Last year we developed a prototype of a Google Chrome. This year, we make the Google Chrome one production ready and touch on Firefox and Safari extensions.

Another idea we can work on is debugging API requests with Web Console. We already can spawn a console anywhere in our Rails application by calling the console method. Can we use the browser extensions to display this console for API requests? How would the UI work?

Propose Your Own?

If nothing on this list interests you, you can always propose your own. Drop an email to mailing list with your idea and see if any mentors would be interested in sponsoring your project.

Keep in mind that a self-directed project like this has a pretty high bar to clear – you would need to be knowledgeable/experienced enough to find the right project to work on, plus you need to be quite motivated/passionate about your project and take the lead. But if that sounds like you, we would love to have you onboard!
