bug? history not saving

w3m/0.5.3+git20230121
Host: tinythinkcentre Kernel: 5.10.61-1-lts arch: x86_64 bits: 64
Desktop: Xfce v: 4.18.1 Distro: ArcoLinux

use_history 1
history 1000
save_hist 1

it does not even generate the history files in ~/.w3m anymore
history_persistent file is always empty

seems like it works if i manually create the history file

touch ~/.w3m/history

but if i delete it, w3m does not generate a new one when i start the program like it use to do
