Is Next.js becoming unusable outside of Vercel?

I came across this article arguing that Next.js is essentially becoming vendor-locked to Vercel and functions poorly on other platforms. I was wondering what the community thinks about this.

To be clear, I'm not saying I distrust Next.js;
I'm posting this out of concern because I genuinely want the framework to succeed.
