Following up from what I posted on youtube, this is my suggestion for improving the feel of the handwheel:
I understand your point from your youtube reply about the o-ring preload, but I think that eliminating the play caused by the handwheel being loose will definitely improve the feel and fine manipulation control of the stages; the o-ring will still serve to improve the precise positioning by preloading the stage's drive nut against the screw thread in only one direction.
As I said before, the washers could also be replaced by actual thrust bearings; a common seller on a common ecommerce platform has a 10-pack of "F3-8M" thrust ball bearings for sale for USD$10.
