API display is not working properly

A mining machine is offline, but the API interface still shows it as running.

Do you mean the API or the Dashboard?
The dashboard API doesn't have a field for "online" or "offline". It is calculated based on the current serverTime - THRESHOLD (default 1 minute) and the time the server received the last status update from the miner.

Please describe in more detail what you mean.

It is an API. After the machine goes offline, the API field still shows "current_status": "RUNNING".

That is correct. The Server doesn't modify fields on its own, it just forwards in this case what the miner reported last.
"client_status.current_status" contains the last repoted status of the miner. To indicate if a miner is online/offline check this field "client_status.last_status_update" and compare it against "currentServerTime".
That is what the dashboard does:
