From the beginning, the GEDCOM design has been better at representing genealogy in its transmission as a set of conclusions rather than as a series of premises moving toward a conclusion. To better understand this point lets look at a few examples.
Example-1, Various "Source Artifacts" assert different details regarding a specific fact. A church book indicates a person was born on a specific date while a personal bible suggests a different date! GEDCOM can support multiple BIRT tags but does not allow each entries to have equal weight until a conclusion has been determined.
Example-2, We find a "Source Artifact" for a death fact on an individual that has a name and birth information that could be included for an individual in the tree structure. Yet, this artifact is not real reliable or it has not been vetted yet. We can't easily add the artifact as evidence for a tentative assertion of the death information in the current GEDCOM design.
In both of these cases collecting the "Source Artifact" would be a first priority in an "Premise Base" methodology, some call this "Evidence Based Genealogy". This makes sure that the artifact does not get lost, while allowing others to evaluate the artifact either directly (in an collective online environment) or remotely by transmitting the GEDCOM to other collaborators. Having the ability to collaborate with other researchers over our hypotheses based on artifacts we found in our research has multiple advantages, but GEDCOM does not support this concept.
Tineke Kosmis has introduced a proposal for v8 GEDCOM that I think is intended to introduce "Premise Based" data retention. I base this conclusion not on her statements in the initial thread but on her comments of 8/22/2025 #680 (comment) titled "GEDCOM8 approach". While I disagree with the terms she uses to express her thoughts, if I read between the lines her needs are valid, but the implementation may need discussion and review.
It is my understanding that LDS designed GEDCOM to provide conclusions for its database!
