[BUG] Spinner Wheel renders who app unresponsible

Describe the issue.

Off the back of: #998

When stuff is loading and the spinner wheel is showing, the entire app is unresponsive and none of the buttons work.

Related to the performance issues above, this will sometimes just hang and never fully complete meaning you need to fully restart the app

I should be able to cancel the api request by clicking other buttons (e.g. on the navbar clicking the home button)

I cannot click any button
