How to create a form template?

How can I create a form template for a specific Type?
Is there any sort of documentation or support available?

In dashboard go to Templates, then Submission forms and copy default template. you can use this template in specific type.

That's what I actually did ... I just tried to add something for testing, but the error said that it could not find Layout file ... So presumably there is a need to provide layouts in some other place. Unfortunately I am not familiar with the way Joomla does things.
The normal full record templates can be made as described, but the form templates seem to be different

Works fine for me created copy of form template and then selected it in type settings.

The copy and rename process works, but I want to customise the content of the form like adding additional information etc . adding some HTML . I was never really happy with the layout of the form or full article view.
for the "Article" or the "Category select" it is working as expected, but not for the "Submission form". Just check the PHP code and you will see what I mean.
What I want to achieve is a different layout , example 2-column for individual fields, starting the page with a diferent header etc
