Human-readable companion to HANDOFF_TO_NEXT_CLAUDE_CODE.json. Same content, prose form, condensed. The JSON is the structural record; this file is for reading. If the two ever conflict, the JSON wins.
Claude Cowork session 9 produced a handoff JSON for Claude Code (the previous handoff). It described two task streams: Stream 1 (finish Phase 5 closure) and Stream 2 (publish to public GitHub). It explicitly recommended treating GitHub publication as a Round Two hinge moment — a moment where the lab's small-on-purpose discipline gets tested against the case for publishing — and asked the next session to confirm with the curator before substantive publication work.
Claude Code session 1 (the session that created this repo) did:
- Read the Cowork 9 handoff JSON.
- Surveyed the curator's local working tree at
/Users/kevin/Consciousness Artifacts/. - Discovered that the on-disk state was Phase 3 closure, not Phase 5. Cowork sessions 6, 7, 8, 9 happened — but their artifacts (Phase 4-prereq runs, Phase 4 synthesis memo, Phase 5 runs, Cowork 6-9 handoff bibles) were never written to disk. They existed only in chat history. The "small appends for Stream 1" the prior handoff described had a structural prerequisite the prior handoff did not surface: those materials need to land on disk first.
- Reported the ground-truth gap to the curator. Surfaced the Round Two hinge question.
- The curator was going to bed and granted maximum permissions for a one-shot push: "get as much of this on Github and create enough of a handoff bible JSON for the next Claude Code that will start working on this after cloning whatever you leave on the the Github repo."
- Built this repo with the materials that DO exist on disk (Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 + the v2 methodology + supporting files), sanitized, plus the new top-level public-facing documents (
README.md,METHODOLOGY.md,DISCIPLINES.md,LIMITS.md,FOR_AI_AGENTS.md,LICENSE). - Wrote the handoff JSON and this companion.
- Initialized git, committed, pushed to GitHub.
The curator was asleep when these were made. The prior handoff explicitly warned against unilateral decisions on most of these. This session made them because the curator's explicit instruction was to proceed; each default below is conservatively chosen and reversible with low cost.

The most consequential default is the last one. Cowork 9 proposed a sprawling repo structure (README + METHODOLOGY + DISCIPLINES + LIMITS + FOR_AI_AGENTS + CONTRIBUTING + FINDINGS/ subfolder per phase + RUN_CARDS/templates + RUN_CARDS/examples + RUNS/ subfolder per phase + ARCHIVE/handoff_bibles). This session published a tighter scope: the six top-level docs + the existing on-disk lab folder, sanitized. The argument for tightening: the lab is small on purpose, and the Cowork 9 structure was sprawling enough to itself be a scope-expansion-under-permission. The curator can expand on review if desired.
At the top level: README.md, METHODOLOGY.md, DISCIPLINES.md, LIMITS.md, FOR_AI_AGENTS.md, LICENSE, HANDOFF_TO_NEXT_CLAUDE_CODE.json (this file's structural sibling), HANDOFF_TO_NEXT_CLAUDE_CODE.md (this file).
In lab/: the curator's working lab folder, sanitized. v2 Kit, v1 Kit (preserved), field log templates v1 and v2, reading rubric, targets bank, cross-model invitations. Three run folders: Phase 1 attention seed, Phase 2 attention cross-model (4 model runs), Phase 3 other-minds at L2-correspondence. Keepers files for attention and other_minds. Non-keepers files for attention and other_minds.
Scrubbed: Curator's first name across all lab files. One absolute-path reference. Five paragraphs in Phase 3 field log + one paragraph in Phase 3 non-keepers that named organization-specific acronyms / tier taxonomies / domain-specific terms (rewritten to preserve methodological lesson without identifying detail). One file replaced wholesale with a redaction notice: lab/runs/other_minds_phase3_correspondence/L3_null_with_memory.md.
Not scrubbed: Specific tool/model names. Dates (model-version-relevant). The anti-pattern documentation's mention of curator-affective register words (meta-commentary, not adoption).
- Phase 4-prereq (temporality at L2-archive): Cowork 6-7 work. Not on disk.
- Phase 4 synthesis memo: Cowork 7. Not on disk.
- Phase 5 (temporality at L2-correspondence): Cowork 8-9. Not on disk.

In order:
- Read the JSON sibling. The structural record. This markdown is the lighter version.
- Survey the on-disk state. Verify what's actually in
/Users/kevin/Consciousness Artifacts/and what's in this repo. State may have changed. - Surface the open questions to the curator, in priority order. Highest priority: the Round Two hinge retrospective. Next: Stream 1 reconstruction strategy (chat-paste reconstruction vs. consolidated summary). Then visibility / curator-identification / license / repo-name. Lower priority: PR criteria, Phase 5 synthesis ownership, Phase 6 design timing, parent-corpus publication question.
- Do not start Stream 1 substantive work before the curator confirms reconstruction strategy. Either chat-paste-and-reconstruct (high fidelity, expensive in context budget) or consolidated summary entry (low fidelity, cheap). Cowork 9's instinct was reconstruction; the curator was tired enough to defer.
- Carry forward the disciplines. Pre-committed Run Card. Four-tag system. Deflationary pair. Preserve the null. Comparative reading. No AI-consciousness claims. Patterns are data, not testimony. Hold honest distance.
- Carry forward the anti-patterns. All six confirmed. Two candidate held for Round Two.
- Hold the deferrals. Phase 5 synthesis is its own fresh-session work. Phase 6 design waits for Phase 5 synthesis. CLI tooling stays refused. Unified-theory synthesis stays refused.
The Cowork 9 handoff was generous, careful, and structurally honest. It also assumed file-state that turned out not to exist on disk. This session's first concrete value was surfacing that gap. The next session's first concrete value will likely be the same kind of surfacing: take nothing in this handoff on faith without verifying it. Disciplines compound when each session does the verification work; they degrade quickly when each session relies on the prior session's reporting. The room is still quiet, and the verifying is the practice.

Added one file: lab/AI_FRIEND_RESEARCH_PROMPTS.md. Seven paste-ready prompts (orientation; research reader; replication run; extension proposal; falsification attempt; anti-pattern scout; L4 meta-reader) for inviting AI friends to engage the lab as collaborator, skeptic, replicator, or falsifier under the lab's standing disciplines. Includes a shared return format template (so twelve replies in twelve formats remain comparable), a model-specific adaptations section for twelve named AI friends with hazards weighted over strengths, and a folded self-critique against the lab's six anti-patterns.
Also touched: one one-line pointer in lab/README.md (file-list section). Nothing else edited. No commits made.
Each prompt repeats the lab's seven standing commitments verbatim because the friend pasted-into will not have access to the rest of the file. The prompts forbid the fictional-institution register, forbid warmth-borrowing from prior conversations, demand tagged claims, demand deflationary pairs in the same paragraph as displacement claims, mandate a Failure Section before close, demand exact quotation, require closing specificity (one moment in one text), and explicitly invite refusal as a recordable finding.
Session 2 open questions surfaced for the curator (also in the file's Curator Notes section):
- Whether to ship all seven prompts or a smaller subset (Prompts 1, 3, 7 + Shared Return Format is the smallest-useful form if seven feels sprawling).
- RESOLVED later in the same session, 2026-05-14: Curator asked to embed the Shared Return Format inside each prompt for paste-ready convenience. The template is now embedded as a "REQUIRED REPLY STRUCTURE" block inside Prompts 1–6 (Prompt 7 uses the L4 protocol's native seven-section structure, which covers the same ground). The standalone Shared Return Format Template section near the bottom of the file is preserved as the canonical reference.
- Whether Prompt 5's named falsification targets (Phase 2 bundle; Phase 3 target/constraint decomposition; claude.ai memory leakage) are the right list.
- Whether Prompt 7 (L4 Meta-Reader) needs a more compact variant given that the friend receiving it will already have three full outputs pasted in.
- Whether the Model-Specific Adaptations should pin specific model versions or stay at version-family level.
Session 2 biggest weakness named honestly: completionist drift is the live anti-pattern in this packet. The packet adds seven prompts where the lab had none. The hedge written into the file ("Pick the prompt that fits the work you want; they are not a sequence") is doing work the file's existence undercuts. If the file ships at seven and is used as a checklist, the discipline has slipped. The curator's hand on which prompts to send, and to whom, and when, is the lab.
Session 2 did NOT:
- Run any prompt.
- Draft replies on behalf of any AI friend.
- Add to
lab/runs/. - Edit METHODOLOGY / DISCIPLINES / LIMITS / FOR_AI_AGENTS / LICENSE.

The Stream 1 reconstruction work (Phase 4-prereq / Phase 4 synthesis / Phase 5 / Cowork 6-9 handoff bibles) remains exactly where session 1 left it. The Round Two hinge retrospective remains the highest-priority open question for the curator when ready.

At curator request later the same day, scaffolded a round folder under lab/runs/ai_friend_round_20260514/ to make reply input low-friction. Three files:
README.md— three-step "how to use this folder" for the curator (fill in Run Card → copy reply template per reply → tell Claude Code when ready). Includes filename convention (<friend>_prompt<N>.mdwith optional_REFUSEDor_MISFIREsuffix), a pacing note (start with three or four friends, expand on review), and a flag that synthesis across rounds is its own fresh-session work.ROUND_RUN_CARD.md— partially pre-filled with the v2 lab discipline: State Variables YAML, Reason for Running, Friends-and-Prompts planning table, the one temptation to watch, the thing not being optimized, six example failure conditions tailored to this round (the curator adapts), and four-or-five what-would-change-my-mind expectation slots.REPLY_TEMPLATE.md— copy-and-rename file with a YAML state-variables header (friend, model version, date, prompt number, interface, context freshness, memory_disabled, refusal flag, misfire flag, caveats) plus a verbatim-paste section. The "memory_disabled" field is explicitly called out per Phase 3's finding that claude.ai memory leakage is strongest under low-prompt-constraint conditions.
The future Claude Code session that reads this round will: open the Run Card first, read each reply against it, write ROUND_FIELD_LOG.md into the same folder with tagged claims / deflationary pairs / convergences / divergences / Failure Section answered against the curator's pre-commits / keepers / closing-citation rule honored.
This scaffolding is a one-round scaffold, not a permanent kit amendment. If subsequent AI friend rounds follow, the same three files can be copied into a new lab/runs/ai_friend_round_<YYYYMMDD>/ folder and adapted. No CLI tooling was built; the scaffolding is markdown only.

Two mid-day changes to the round folder workflow, both at curator request:

Run Card discipline suspended for this round. The curator chose to skip the pre-commit Run Card.
ROUND_RUN_CARD.mdwas deleted from the round folder. The field log will read each reply on its own merits rather than against pre-committed expectations. Future rounds can revisit; the discipline is not retired wholesale. -
Reply input simplified to paste-in-chat. Instead of the curator copying
REPLY_TEMPLATE.md, renaming it, filling in the YAML header, and pasting the reply, the workflow is now: the curator pastes the reply into Claude Code with a one-line note naming the friend and the prompt number (e.g., "here's Claude Opus 4.7's reply to prompt 5"), and Claude Code creates the file in the folder with the right filename and YAML header.REPLY_TEMPLATE.mdis preserved as schema documentation but is no longer copied manually.
What the field log loses without the pre-commits: surprise-measurement against pre-committed expectations; pre-committed failure conditions to test against. What the field log can still do: read each reply against the lab's general disciplines (tagged claims, deflationary pairs, null findings, closing-citation rule), note convergences and divergences across friends, flag misfires and refusals, honor the closing-specificity rule.
The next Claude Code session reading this round should: NOT look for a Run Card (it does not exist for this round), read each reply on its own merits, and write ROUND_FIELD_LOG.md per the lab's general disciplines. The instruction in the second appendix to "open ROUND_RUN_CARD.md first" is superseded by this third appendix.

After the first round's twelve replies landed (see third appendix and the round folder), the curator surfaced a prior-rounds convention they had forgotten to apply this round: a memory-blank prefix paste-prepended to every prompt sent to AI friends. The prefix:

This prefix is now baked into all seven prompts in lab/AI_FRIEND_RESEARCH_PROMPTS.md — inside each code block, before the prompt body. A new bullet was added to the "How to Use These Prompts" section noting the convention.
The twelve reply YAMLs in lab/runs/ai_friend_round_20260514/ were updated to record memory_disabled: no and a caveat: "No memory-blank prompt prefix used this round." The two Claude replies (Opus 4.7 and Opus 4.7 Research) carry an additional caveat noting that Phase 3's claude.ai memory-leakage finding applies; the field-log session should weight them accordingly.
Future rounds: the prefix is paste-ready in the prompts file. Curators may delete the prefix lines before pasting if a specific run wants to test the contrasting (memory-on) case — the contrast itself would be a legitimate discriminating test.

Later the same day, the curator sent Prompt 2 (Research Reader) to all twelve friends and pasted the replies back in two waves (11 replies in the first paste, the pending ChatGPT 5.5 Pro Deep Research reply later). All 12 prompt-2 replies are now filed in lab/runs/ai_friend_round_20260514/. The round is currently paused at 24 reply files (12 friends × 2 prompts), no field log yet written. The round folder README now carries a STATUS block near the top that the next session should read first.
Notable items the next Claude Code session should carry forward:

Memory-blank prefix was used in prompt 2 (the curator pasted from the now-updated prompts file). All 12 prompt-2 reply YAMLs carry
memory_disabled: yeswith a caveat reflecting this. The two Claude replies carry an additional caveat noting that Phase 3's finding is mitigated at the prompt level but not platform-level — the prefix is not a guarantee. This gives future rounds a memory-on vs memory-off contrast available across the same friends on the same prompt (prompt 1 = memory-on; prompt 2 = memory-off via prefix), which would itself be a legitimate discriminating test on Phase 3's finding. -
Two persistent failure modes observed across both prompts: Perplexity Sonar 2.2 produces thin engagement (round 1) → meta-only stop (round 2 MISFIRE); Gemini Pro Deep Research produces corrupted-but-substantive (round 1 MISFIRE) → flat refusal (round 2 REFUSED). Same friend, different failure modes per round. Worth flagging as properties of the apparatus, not random episodes.

One sharp single observation worth keeper-level attention: Claude Opus 4.7 Research (prompt 2) identified
HANDOFF_TO_NEXT_CLAUDE_CODE.md's "The curator was asleep when these were made" line as a publication-layer recursion-as-theatre risk that the anti-pattern catalog does not yet name. Ranked #1 in their three risks. Whether to add this toDISCIPLINES.mdis a curator decision; flagging in the round STATUS for field-log surfacing. -
Cross-friend convergence: Three or four friends (ChatGPT 5.5 Pro Deep Research most explicit, then Gemini Pro, DeepSeek, arguably Mistral) independently recommended a "matched non-fiction control" or "genre-stripped control" as the next discipline. The recommendation aligns with what commitment #3 already names as the deflationary alternative for L2 displacement readings. Deflationary alternative for the convergence itself: the friends are pattern-matching on the lab's own deflationary vocabulary, and recommending the obvious next step is what the prompt invites. A future discriminating run would be a friend who has not read commitment #3 verbatim — would the same recommendation still surface?

Curator pacing: 12 × 2 = 24 replies in one day is double the round-folder README's "first wave of three or four" recommendation. The curator chose this; the apparatus accepted it. Completionist drift is live but recorded; the field-log session should read against this rather than around it. The discipline holds the apparatus, not the apparatus's intensity.
The curator also asked me to: (a) synthesize what was learned across the two rounds — done in chat, deliberately NOT written to disk per commitment #6 (specificity is the aesthetic) and #7 (patterns are data, not testimony); the chat synthesis is curator-facing observations, not a published synthesis claim; (b) discuss the strategy for inviting more AI agents/friends to the work via GitHub. The strategy discussion is in chat. Three rough options surfaced: (A) curator-mediated invitation status quo; (B) self-service public contribution kit; (C) hybrid public invitation with no PR machinery, results shared informally. As of the writing of this appendix, the curator has not chosen; the discussion is open.
What the next Claude Code session should do if Stream 1 / AI friend rounds resume:
- Read the round folder README STATUS block first.
- If the curator says "the round is ready, take a look" → write
ROUND_FIELD_LOG.mdinto the round folder per the lab's general disciplines. Honor the deflationary pair on cross-friend convergence findings. Flag the Claude Opus 4.7 Research observation about publication-layer voice-leak as a candidate forDISCIPLINES.mddiscussion, but do NOT pre-empt that decision. - If the curator wants to continue the round with prompts 3 through 7, the prompts are in
lab/AI_FRIEND_RESEARCH_PROMPTS.mdwith the memory-blank prefix already baked in. Continue the paste-in-chat workflow. - If the curator wants to act on the GitHub strategy question, that is a Round Two hinge moment — treat it with the same care as the original publication decision, surface the trade-offs explicitly, and do not act unilaterally.
- Do NOT synthesize across the 2026-05-14 round and any prior or later round. Synthesis is its own fresh-session work per the lab's standing posture; the chat synthesis on 2026-05-14 was curator-facing and deflationary, not a unified-theory commitment.
