turns out the subshell is broken by a very elaborate fish customization Garuda Linux comes with, specifically running of neofetch everytime a shell is opened. once i commented out the particular lines in ~/.config/fish/config.fish subshell works without any issues

## Run fastfetch if session is interactive
# if status --is-interactive && type -q fastfetch
#   fastfetch --config dr460nized.jsonc
# end
