Generate null communities for synchrony (Gross)

Hello,
is there any possibility to calculate a cyclic shift model for species synchrony (Gross) in a similar way as it is done for the variance ratio ? As stated by the authors, this metric has the potential for null-model significance testing. With the help of the description provided for the "cyclic_shift" function, I failed to get this to work. 

Any help would be appreciated !
