maturin versus sccache in Google Cloud Engine with Google Cloud Storage

Heya. I am doing some builds in an x86_64 GCE virtual machine (g2-standard-4). I am successfully compiling my Rust code with sccache (pointing to a GCS bucket) via cargo build .... But when i try to build via maturin develop --release ..., I get this error:

  Caused by: Failed to run rustc to get the host target
