Updated support for batch builders

This is an update for Stas Baranov's batching patch
(1153786). If there is a way to add this to the
existing thread, please let me know.

This patch is a preview version only. There are still
issues to be worked out. Some existing unit tests
fail, and additional tests need to be written. I'm
submitting it now in hopes of getting some comments.
I'll start a thread on the dev mailing list to discuss it.
