The gf.component.connect method does not seem to reliably pass the verification process (I still get the error related to disconnected pins).

I'm sorry to hear that. It will require someone to fix gdsfactory and/or the implementation of the EBeam PDK in gdsfactory. I suggest creating an issue there.
