Description

@rmjaffe

Descriptive Summary

SC&A has created new boilerplate rights statement for collections. These revised statements will eventually replace the statements that currently appear in finding aids, MARC collection records and in digital objects metadata records. The Update rightsStatement with revised language UCSCLibrary/ucsc-library-digital-collections#366 card was created to represent that work on the DAMS Project Board.

This work has opened up conversation around other alteration we may want to make to rights information we're publishing in the DAMS. In the future, we would like to approach this as a focused project which may result in updates to existing rights language in the DAMS as well as changes to how we use, populate or label rights-related metadata properties. This conversation/project was anticipated in part by Jess is documented in Determine requirements for Rights and Usage Information for End Users UCSCLibrary/ucsc-library-digital-collections#350 with particular attention to enduser needs.

This work will involve collection specialists (SMEs), the UI/UX and metadata librarians, as well as developers who may be asked to assist in rolling out updates and making batch changes to metadata values.

More conversation needs to be had to better map out a project plan.

Background

Teresa, Sue, Kate and Rachel met 11/18/21 to discuss proposed changes to the rights statements in the DAMS and decided to hold off "until there is bandwidth to make a concerted effort to review the current statements and craft a series of long-lasting boilerplate statements."
