Duplicates

Hi,

As mentioned here, I was afraid of uploading duplicates.

Well, this happened 😄

I wanted to follow your workflow of uploading an observation image to the wikidata taxons page and ended up seeing "my" upload on wiki commons already on wikidata. First I was deeply impressed but then noticed it was not "mine", but rather the same image already uploaded. Of course, it does not have all the beautiful metadata associated with it still...

No idea what the correct way to handle this is, just dropping here the example as I came across it.

Interesting example, where both images were uploaded to both commons and iNaturalist. Techically the image are also different images, the resolution and dimension are different from each other.

I am not sure how to differentiate between the two, other than maybe sophisticated pattern recognition.

Maybe a simple check would be a visible inspection of the photos in the same Category to which the selected images will be uploaded. I didn't run into duplicates yet, since I start from Wikipedia articles that lack images in the infobox and often does not have a category on commons either.
