I had sort of assumed I'd be able to mDNS resolution on macOS and Linux with this library, but I guess c-ares doesn't really support it on Linux, does it?

That’s correct. For features tracking that upstream, follow c-ares/c-ares#171.

In the meantime, we’re interested in someone putting together a backend that uses https://github.com/orlandos-nl/DNSClient, which does have mDNS support.
