Publish research design / strive for more #5

Description

(for transparency and future understanding, this message is added based on the discussion of our manifesto during CHIIR 2021, just so the contributions of others are visible and can be used as starting points to update the manifesto where needed.)

Dana McKay: There is a type of paper that one of my colleagues in general practice talked about called a 'protocol paper' which may be a useful approach to examine. The idea is you publish the study design prospectively, and hold yourself to it.

Marijn Koolen: Yes, registering research questions, hypotheses and designs in advance is happening in other fields as well. I think it is important to make a distinction here between exploratory studies and hypothesis-driven studies, although arguably, you could pre-register intent for exploratory studies as well. On the other hand, there is an understandable resistance of plenty of researcher who don't want to publish explicit and concrete plans before getting their results published, for a.o. fear of being scooped.
