Variable output block sizes

Currently, the size of the blocks in the disk buffer are fixed. Therefore, the rate at which these blocks become "available" (and hence can be written to disk) depends on the integration time.

It would be better if the block size was dynamically scaled, so that disk blocks become available for writing to disk every second or so.
