Change font for text templates and annotations to use icon font?

Is there a way to specify the font family from an external font source such as https://pictogrammers.com/library/mdi/

How can I add additional fonts to the existing css fonts available to the card?
I found that I can use a number of predefined font families, but really wanted to use an icon font like mdi or fontawesome (fortawesome?)
So symbol font works, but it's a little limited...

    textfont:
      family: symbol
      size: 25
      color: "#ffffffaa"

really a cosmetic thing, but visualising data is all about the visual elements for me 😀

I saw that @adegenkolbe was trying to do something similar a while ago but that workaround with svg didn't work for me, any extra details?
