Create a dedicated test suite for the shell plugin to prevent regressions

As mentioned in #1010, and from what we've seen along the years about the multiple regressions and issues regarding the shell plugins, it would be nice/required to create a test suite dedicated to ensure the base behaviour of the different shell plugins.

This issue is open to contributions.
