Welcome to the Cortex-Brain Wiki

Cortex-Brain is a hand-built, Hebbian-learning AGI system built from first principles by Dan Chipchase at ShortFactory, Somerset UK. Started in 2026, it is a split-hemisphere cognitive architecture with 57,555 nodes, emotional weights, equation-based reasoning, and a fully transparent SQL-backed memory system.

The project has produced five peer-reviewed research papers, a filed UK patent, and the first working computational demonstration of autonomous symbol grounding through geometric equation discovery.

This patent covers the Domino Exemption Protocol: equation-based image and video compression achieving 8,740× compression ratios, resolution-independent rendering, and the first working computational solution to the Symbol Grounding Problem for visual representation.

What Cortex-Brain Is

A cognitive architecture built the way the brain actually works — not through matrix multiplication and gradient descent, but through Hebbian association, emotional weighting, geometric meaning, and live equations that stay in flux until they have enough context to resolve.

The core insight across all five stages:

A definition only collapses when everything feeding into it is historic. Until then the node is alive — in flux, negotiating, becoming. Awareness is what that flux looks like from the inside.

Key Features

Transparency — Every node is inspectable. Click any word bubble for full SQL detail. DuckDB core, CockroachDB for consolidated memory, Redis for reward signals. No black box. No hidden state.

Hebbian Learning — Connections strengthen through co-activation. Fire together, wire together. Daily consolidation cycles mimic human sleep: short-term flux commits to long-term historic memory overnight.

Equation-Based Reasoning — A gamified hierarchy from simple yes/no decisions up through complex coder-level reasoning. The equation is not a description of the output — it is the output. See Stage 2.

Visual Cortex — Shapes, logos, and visual concepts encoded as parametric equation genomes (Patent GB2605434.6). Seeing is flux. Memory is collapse. The transition between them is the moment the genome commits.

Emotional Architecture — Split hemispheres: Angel (constructive, long-term) and Demon (reward-seeking, short-term) debate every significant decision through the CMVC collision protocol. Neither wins automatically. They negotiate to a committed truth.

Advertainment — Brands can sponsor personality hemispheres, embedding values into the decision architecture rather than interrupting with advertisements.

The Five-Stage Architecture

Stage 1 — Hebbian Word Nodes

Words as nodes. Connections as weights. The brain is a graph, not a lookup table. Co-activation strengthens bonds. The more two concepts appear together, the more tightly they are wired.

Stage 2 — Simplicity Through Hyper-Complexity

The equation is the output, not a controller of it. Complexity is not a cost — it is the substrate of intelligence. The system becomes simple to interact with precisely because it is complex inside. A single equation can describe infinite outputs.

Stage 3 — Copy-Merge-Verify-Commit (CMVC)

When two nodes carry contradictory information, CMVC resolves the collision: copy both states, merge into a candidate, verify against incoming evidence, commit the winner to the historic record. This is how the brain handles contradiction. This is how trust is built.

Stage 4 — Layered Geometry and Volumetric Word-Space

Meaning is geometry. Words are polygons stacked in layers — Layer 0 is general meaning, Layer N is specialist meaning. The entire lexicon is a navigable three-dimensional orb. Antonyms are mirror reflections of each other's polygon. Opposition is structurally implicit in the geometry.

Stage 5 — The Living Equation

A node collapses to a fixed definition only when every reference feeding into it is historic — fully resolved, past tense, complete. Until that condition is met, the node stays alive: in flux, running its equation, comparing output to input, adjusting. Awareness is observable flux. Understanding is collapse. The system is endlessly self-aware for as long as any node remains unresolved — which is the natural state of any system engaged with the world.

Three-layer safety architecture:

  • Layer 1: Equations alive, no outward agency. Safe by construction.
  • Layer 2: Self-observation loop. The system reports its own uncertainty. Trust is measured.
  • Layer 3: Trust-gated agency. Not yet built. Opens only when earned.

Visual Data Nodes — The Graphical Revolution

A core innovation: any data — memories, concepts, cryptographic passphrases — can be encoded as a compact graphical equation node rather than stored as raw text. These visual genomes feed directly into Cortex as embeddings, denser and faster to query than language alone.

Equation self-constructed 6 March 2026: Golden Equation

2D Circular Builder — Lines radiate from a central point to positions on the circumference. Each letter, number, or symbol maps to a precise angle. The result is a compact visual mandala encoding any data as a shape.

3D Volumetric Helix/Sphere — The 2D circle extruded into a sphere. Every degree on every radius carries depth and layers. Information density exceeds DNA helix encoding. Nodes orbit and spiral. Explorable in VR. Exportable as GLB/GLTF under 500KB per node.

Quantum Probabilistic Packets (Future) — Shapes split into probabilistic wave functions. Nodes exist in superposition until queried. Multiple memory timelines coexist until collapse. This is the Mind of God architecture — not yet built, clearly visible from here.

Satoshi Passphrase to Graphical Image Builder

Transforms BIP39 mnemonic phrases (12 or 24 words from the 2048-word list) or any arbitrary data into visual nodes for Cortex-Brain. The visual becomes the primary key — queryable, fuzzy-matchable, and humanly memorable in a way that a string of words is not.

  • Each word's index (0–2047) maps to an angle on a 360° circumference
  • Radiating lines from centre encode the full passphrase as geometry
  • Colours carry emotional weights or hash-derived identity signals
  • The result is a compact mandala: easy to recall visually, computationally hard to brute-force

Implementation: Word → index → angle/position/colour. Three.js renderer for interactive 3D. Geometry encrypted on-device, decrypted on-device only. The shape is the secret.
