I had to install pkg qtmultimedia5-dev then qmake completed:

This is differerent from prior builds of 3.7.x and 3.8.x.

Not since I started building 3.7.x and 3.8.x on this machine.
Looks like it's been updated since I last read it around July 2021.

Evidently 3.7.x and 3.8.x don't have that dependency.

I'm wondering whether we should provide a CONFIG option to disable the audio alert feature and therefore avoid the dependency.
In general, I think it's a useful feature which should be available by default, but the additional dependency might be annoying for some users.

What does it do?

Did you try the "What's this?" text for the option? (Hopefully that's clear - otherwise it needs fixing.)
