What is the relation of the calculated magnitude to the original signal

If I am sampling a signal that is +-3.3V then what does the calculated magnitude relate to? I seem to be getting values that are very much larger than 3.3. Is there a mathematical way to normalise the magnitude to the maximum of the original signal?
