Nothing ruins a volunteer project faster than trying to organize a structure for bringing in funding. The focus inevitably shifts from solving technical problems as a hobby into figuring out how to get and spend money.

In general I agree. Long term there might be a middle ground with an existing organization which handles all the financial and international tax stuff. I think there is one which specializes on making it easy for open source projects so they don't have to set up their own structures but I forgot its name.

From a personal perspective, it's very low on my list of things that I want to engage my brain with.

We don't have any outgoings like paying for a domain name or running servers or similar, which keeps things simple.

There are some advantages of not being paid too, like there is no sense of debt to any person or organization. This helps avoid biased judgement in terms of feature implementation steering development in any particular direction.
