Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
Generating an authoritative list of extant fish taxonomy to use as a default tree in Specify has proven difficult when relying solely on the GBIF backbone taxonomy. The previous default fish taxonomy tree provided by Specify was not exhaustive, leaving Ichthyology collections without a comprehensive, ready-to-use taxonomic backbone.

Describe the solution you'd like
Add Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (ECoF) as an official, default taxon tree option for fish collections in Specify.

Describe alternatives you've considered

  • Continuing to use the GBIF backbone taxonomy, but this requires significant manual curation to create an accurate and exhaustive list for fishes.
  • Reusing the previous default fish taxon tree, which we already know is incomplete.

Reported By
Specify Collections Consortium (with data provided by Jon D. Fong at the California Academy of Sciences)

Additional context
Jon D. Fong (Research Collections Manager, Dept. of Ichthyology at CAS) has graciously provided a CSV file containing all valid fish species from ECoF to be used as the source data.
