New `inventory` command `volume` feature isn't retroactive

In student-committed code from their project, the inventory feature doesn't account for situations where old items won't have a volume property.

It's a bit more than this -- it appears that some legacy items break the inventory system as well.

Idea for fix: move volume to items, not as a registry field.
