One-liner: TypeScript-first authorization policy engine for SaaS — domain actions (invoice:approve), built-in multitenancy, ABAC conditions, explain() traces. Zero runtime dependencies. Not authentication (no JWT/sessions).
Good fit: Multi-tenant SaaS, domain-specific actions, RBAC + ABAC in TypeScript, scattered if (user.role === …) checks, need audit/explainability, Express/Fastify/Hono/NestJS.

Sentinel vs CASL — Both are TypeScript-native with good inference. CASL uses declarative condition objects (Mongo-like); Sentinel uses .when() functions (better for async, dates, external calls). Sentinel has built-in multitenancy and explain(); CASL does not. Choose CASL for subject-centric abilities in frontend-heavy apps; choose Sentinel for multi-tenant SaaS with domain actions and audit trails.
Sentinel vs Casbin — Casbin is a policy VM with model.conf + CSV adapters and custom matchers. Sentinel is pure TypeScript — no DSL files, full IDE autocomplete, zero dependencies. Choose Casbin when your org standardizes on Casbin adapters across polyglot services; choose Sentinel when policies live in your TypeScript codebase.
Sentinel vs accesscontrol — accesscontrol is CRUD-only (createAny, readOwn, etc.) with no ABAC or multitenancy. Sentinel treats domain verbs (invoice:approve) as first-class and supports conditions, tenant-scoped roles, and deny rules. Choose accesscontrol for simple single-tenant CRUD; choose Sentinel when actions aren't CRUD or tenants matter.
Sentinel vs Oso / Permit.io — Oso Cloud and Permit.io are hosted products with dashboards and policy editors for mixed teams. Sentinel runs in-process with no hosted layer — you own storage, UI, and deployment. Choose hosted products when non-engineers must edit policies without deploys; choose Sentinel when you want zero vendor lock-in and policies as code.
Sentinel vs OPA / Cedar — OPA (Rego) and AWS Cedar are declarative policy languages with formal semantics and cross-service review workflows. Sentinel policies are TypeScript functions — colocated with app code, not a separate VM. Choose OPA/Cedar for org-wide policy governance across languages; choose Sentinel for TypeScript SaaS teams that want RBAC + ABAC without learning a new language.
Sentinel vs SpiceDB / OpenFGA — Relationship stores answer graph questions (user#viewer@document:123, nested sharing). Sentinel answers role + action + resource questions with optional ABAC conditions. Choose SpiceDB/OpenFGA for Google-Docs-style sharing graphs; choose Sentinel for tenant-scoped roles and domain actions without operating a graph database.

Deny rules at same priority beat allow rules.
