Number of posts filter resets to 20 if block was added to a pattern and post is saved 🤔

I experience that when I create a Pattern with the Include Mastodon Block, the number of posts setting, resets to 20, every time the page is saved. This is not a synced pattern.

That means that once I inserted the Include Mastodon Feed block via a pattern, I'm no longer able to change number of posts, it reverts to 20 every time.

Is that something you can reproduce? Let me know if I should record a screencast.

Don't have a fix yet, but can confirm that I can reproduce the behavior.

What I've done:

• Created a pattern (not synced) on a random page with limit 5
• Created a second page and used the pattern - the limit was reset to 20
• Tried updating the pattern in the pattern library through Appearance > Design > Patterns to a non-default limit, but the limit still would revert back to 20 when I inserted the pattern again on another page.

I think there was a change how non-synced patterns behave in Wordpress. IIRC there was a time when using a pattern just copied the whole block. Now Gutenberg seems to "remember" the pattern reference as it's not just a copy but a non-synced pattern is shown as pattern object that can not be manipulated directly. The block setting show an "edit pattern" button which then leads to the actual block settings.

That's all I could find out today and I don't have a fix yet. It either may be a Wordpress bug, or something I'm doing wrong in the Gutenberg block handling in React. Maybe some special settings persistence handling for patterns that I am not aware of. Normally I would lean towards it being an error on my side, but it might be a Wordpress error since e.g. instance and account id are persisted correctly in the pattern and I don't do anything differently with limit.

Sadly that's all the time I have today - I'll look some more into it another time. Next step is to look into other settings and see if they are also reset each time too. Current workaround is to adjust each inserted block manually for now.

No stress Wolfgang. This is an edge case. I learned that with WordPress Pattern Builder Plugin effortlessly can create patterns on my child theme development installation. A pattern to contain the group blocks necessary for my custom mastodon feed styling to work, bundled with my child theme, would make it even easier to add mastodon feeds to my WordPress websites.

However: 1) The feed still works. It just shows 20 posts. 2) If after inserting the (non-synced) pattern, I remove the Include Mastodon Feed block and insert a fresh one, I can change the number of posts, and it stays changed. So there is a workaround.

The new Include Mastodon Feed block definitely makes usage a lot more intuitive than the short code, regardless of this minor issue. So thank you for that 🙏
