Keymap debugger

perhaps Zed could add a "keymap debugger" function which lets a user select a context, type a key, and see both how it was parsed by Zed, and what method it called?

The command you are looking for is dev: open key context view.
You don't select the context quite like you mention.
But open the panel and then do a key in the context you are interested in.
You should see the Context Tree you can use to bind with. It will also show all the other keymaps and the reason for why they were not used (such as being in the wrong context, or haveing lower priority because it found a better match).

unfortunately te key context view shows the key after the translation, so it doesn't tell me what I should write in my config file... for instance I wanted to set a shortcut for "cmd-/" and I had to guess somehow it is "cmd->" and then when I open the debugger and press the "cmd+/" key, it shows "cmd-/" and not "cmd->" (so it shows the result after translation, not before, so it doesn't allow me to "find" what I should add to the config file)
