Invalid Error Message Stating "No Internet Connection" #96
I can leave the Weather app in the background for 5 minutes, come back to make it a foreground tab in Chrome, and it thinks that I don't have an internet connection. But I do.
I didn't see this as an open report anywhere so thought I'd do it myself. This is my first time reporting so be gentle if I've made a mistake. :)
I have this same issue -- I leave FluentWeather v1.5.0 running all the time, and more often than not, I get the (invalid) "No internet connection" message when I show its window. I'm running Win11 23H2.
I have a fiber connection and I know it's not dropping because I use VDI for work, and if my connection were to drop for even a moment, VDI would, too (it sucks that way).
Hi, I was using my ethernet connection.
In fact, that's a very good question so I have reinstalled it again as I
had uninstalled it. I'm going to check again using ethernet first. Then
I'll unplug my cat5 and go entirely onto wifi and see what happens. I'll
give you an update when I've completed it.
By the way, the "No Internet Connection" error message only appears when the request actually fails, could you check if your firewall is in some way interfering with the app?
Thank you for the update. I almost left you a followup message 2 days ago
but Microsoft sent me an updated Beta of Windows 11 and ever since your
FluentWeather has been working perfectly. It was a Microsoft issue that's
obviously been fixed.
I can't reproduce your issue, unfortunately. The error "No internet connection" pops up only if the HTTP requests actually fails. At the moment, I would say it is an issue specific to your computer. I'm sorry I can't help any further
Same issue with me here. Windows 11 Pro 25H2 on a rock-stable 500MBit fiber connection. Ethernet or WiFi, it's the same issue. I'm connected 24/7 to the internet, and none of my other apps or their logs show any connection drops. Btw, if you're saying that particulaar message pops up when an HTTP request fails, maybe you should implement the correct error message saying that instead of a general fail-safe message (that is claiming something that isn't the case with any of us). Not being able to fetch weather data from the server is not equal to not being connected to the internet at all.
Yes, I get it too. I did a fresh install today of FluentWeather directly
from the Microsoft Store to make sure I had the latest version. The funny
thing is, even with the error message showing, I can watch the program
update behind the error. It doesn't throw an error when the program is in
the background, behind other windows. It seems like when it's minimized to
the taskbar and arises from the taskbar, that's when I get the error
displayed.

It seems I found the culprit for the error message that's popping up.
Just go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > (Search for FluentWeather and click on its "three dots" menu) > Advanced options
Then, under "Background app permissions" and "Let this app run in background", choose "Never" or "Always" (just not "Power optimized")
And Voila! No more internet connection error message (for me at least).
Try it if you're using a desktop PC. (For laptops, it could have some impact on the battery life)

Those options seem to be only available on Windows 11. I'm still using Windows 10, so that explains why I never encountered those errors.

Well, actually, from the app's point of view, the internet connection is lacking, as the request is failing and no HTTP error code is generated. So the error message is technically correct. The app can't know that Windows is selectively blocking connections to it specifically.

Yeah, I'm on Win11. I would suggest installing it inside the VM, and try to debug your app workflow while playing with those settings. I switched the option to "Never" (tho "Always" is more logical), and the error didn't pop up a single time since then (only after I resume my pc from sleep - but that's another issue 😁).

The same issue in v1.5.0 with newly installed, need to fix it.

Does this happen only when connected to the internet via Ethernet? Does it happen if you connect via WiFi?

Great, thanks for the update, Gregg! I will close the issue now. Feel free to reopen if you reencounter this error.
enervated commentedon May 8, 2025
I don't have the ability to reopen the issue, but I'm still seeing the error message. It seems like it happens less often, but it does still happen.
Gabboxl commentedon May 8, 2025
Are you using Ethernet? What Windows version and build are you using?
enervated commentedon May 9, 2025
Yes, Ethernet, on Win11 23H2. I'm still on 23H2 because 24H2 had serious issues. That was some months ago, though.
Gabboxl commentedon May 10, 2025
Can you try using WiFi instead, and let me know if you still get the connection error?
enervated commentedon May 12, 2025
Not really as I'm on a hard-wired desktop PC.
Gabboxl commentedon May 12, 2025
Alright, do you have a proxy set up on your system?
enervated commentedon May 13, 2025
I do not have a proxy set up.

Yeah, it's sporadic. I can't figure out what triggers it. I've also updated to 24H2 and still get it.
But it seems that if the app simply retried rather than putting up that dialog, the HTTP request would work.

Partly fixed with #113 + added more technical message with 69940d2
Still need to implement lifecycle methods OnResume/OnSuspend correctly

Should be fixed in the next release (1.6.0), going out next week.
