During **2019** TheBusyBiscuit slowly started to get back into more active development of Slimefun, mainly focusing on code quality and performance improvements together with Walshy (@WalshyDev).
This return to development increased during the **2020** COVID-19 pandemic which caused many to stay safely at home, giving a lot of people more time to spend home as universities, schools and workplaces around the globe closed down.
In **April of 2020**, we held our first [Addon Jam](https://github.com/Slimefun/Slimefun4/wiki/Addon-Jam-2020) in which 6 people participated by developing their own Slimefun Addon which was then judged by TheBusyBiscuit and Walshy.
Meanwhile our discord server has reached 2,000 members at the beginning of **June in 2020**.
Slimefun is still vivid and alive and has an incredible community behind and around it.
Also in 2020, the [Slimefun Addon Community](https://github.com/Slimefun-Addon-Community) was created, intended to be a place for developers to express their creativity, connect with others and share experiences. A separate community-run server for community addons was also opened around this time, and the Discord server reached 2,000 members at the beginning of **June in 2020**.

By early **2021**, the discord server has reached 4,500 members and we are growing our second organization: [Slimefun Addon Community](https://github.com/Slimefun-Addon-Community), a place for developers to express their creativity, connect with others and share experiences. The goal of that project was to bring people together and allow them to work on addons collaboratively. The second [Addon Jam](https://github.com/Slimefun/Slimefun4/wiki/Addon-Jam-2021) is also taking place in **April of 2021**.
By now, Slimefun has turned 8 years old.
If Slimefun was a child, it would already be sitting in elementary school... which is strange when you think about it. But the community behind this has persisted over so many years and still continues to grow!
Slimefun celebrated its 10th birthday in **2023**. By then, the addon community was thriving and Slimefun development was better than ever, with many contributors contributing every month and new addons getting released at a regular pace, with over 2000 servers running it and over 3000 players online at once. Despite all the upbeat moods, there was a phantom menace in the shadows. Slimefun is an old plugin, older than most plugins expect to live. Over time, code became old, laggy, and unmaintainable. There were many rewrites scheduled for key subsystems of Slimefun, including block storage, cargo, androids, player profiles, and researches. However, at around this time, the people who had permissions to merge code into Slimefun began to be less active, resulting in that simple changes would take months to review and merge.

*To be continued...*
As if that wasn't enough, in **April 2024** Mojang released Minecraft update 1.20.5 ("Armored Paws"), marking the transition to the new game drop system. This was bad news for developers as it meant potentially game-breaking changes could be introduced whenever, and multi-version support suddenly became much harder. Additionally, Spigot introduced a change to the way items work internally, breaking Slimefun's item system and every addon along with it. With many of the people who had permissions to update the Slimefun code becoming more inactive, the work to update Slimefun to the new version was long and tedious. All in all, it took over half a year to finally release an *experimental* build for 1.20.5 that additionally required addons to update their own code to work with the new experimental Slimefun API.

By **early 2025**, the lack of regular updates to Slimefun, as well as the low volume of addons having updated to the experimental version, caused some community members to suspect Slimefun's development had ceased. Despite not knowing it at the time, their fears were realized when in **April 2025** TheBusyBiscuit opened a channel in the Discord server for the maintainers, contributors, and addon developers to discuss the future of Slimefun. TheBusyBiscuit made it clear he no longer had the time to develop Slimefun, and after much pained discussion, it was eventually decided that Slimefun should be abandoned, as nobody wanted to take the project on. The fateful announcement was made on **October 11, 2025**, and Slimefun was officially dead.

Despite Slimefun being abandoned, the spirit of Slimefun continues on. The Chinese-language fork of Slimefun lives on with its own vibrant community, and several forks and spiritual sucessors exist, aiming to keep the flame of Slimefun burning. Many friendships too, were made in the many years, and no doubt continue to hold strong and keep Slimefun alive.
