Description

The LLMSpanClassifier component is a LLM attribute predictor.

Two main classes are proposed:

• The LLMSpanClassifier component is a LLM attribute predictor.
• The AsyncLLM class is a helper to interact asyncronuously with an external llm API. It receives a list of messages (from edsnlp or not) and it returns the answer.

The tests are also structured in two main parts.

Hi @aricohen93, great work !

I took the liberty to make some small/large modifications. Here's a summary

• Switched to a basic component, as the first version used a TrainableComponent which is less relevant here since we don't control a Pytorch model.
• Schema of the output: before, we could pass an API response_format, but we still expected a single label string and did regex mapping with no validation or multi-field mapping. Now, we pass a Pydantic schema from which we can auto generate the JSON Schema. This allows output validation and setting multiple (optionnally nested) attributes per span.
• Prompting: it supported fixed string fields only. Now, prompt can be a callable that builds full chat messages from (context, few shot examples): this gives more freedom to the user. For serialization, the function can be registered using confit.
• Few-shot retrieval: I've added an optional BM25 retriever to select the most similar examples, similarly to the LLM Markup Extractor
• Async/parallelism: Parallel requests can now span across documents and docs are yielded as soon as their spans finish (before each document was processed one after the other, with intra document parallelism)
• So I moved the async loop to a singleton worker in another thread, to be allow async parallel request (so not multi threading), without the pain of put async/await in all our API
• Few-shot examples source: switched from manual (input, output) strings to real Doc examples: we render context with the span highlighted and auto-extract ground-truth values via BINDING_GETTERS (optionally serialized through the schema).
• Context handling: switched from ad-hoc SpanGetterArg/callable → plain text, span only hinted via a prefix, to ContextWindow + context_formatter. We rebuild a context doc with the target span as the sole ent, enabling consistent or [markdown] highlighting or custom formatting. But your question format with "<<<" is still possible using a custom prompt function (which can be registered using confit to allow the use of config files)
