This is a little more idiomatic as far as I can tell, and greatly speeds the code up.

This is not a change to the algorithm, just instead getting rid of a bunch of virtual function calls, making it more comparable to the Go code for example.
Unfortunately the main project doesn't build for me, so I can only vouch that it works when compiled manually, not sure about the test harness.
