What variant of Codex are you using?
Codex desktop app on macOS.
What feature would you like to see?
Please add an option to switch side-panel tabs with Cmd+1 through Cmd+9 when keyboard focus is inside the side panel, including an embedded browser page or its address bar.
The shortcuts should select tabs by their visible left-to-right order. This should apply to the side panel's tab strip, rather than switching chats in the main sidebar.
Please also expose these actions in Settings > Keyboard Shortcuts so users can assign their own hotkeys:
- Switch to side-panel tab 1–9
- Switch to the next side-panel tab
- Switch to the previous side-panel tab
Why would this be useful?
I frequently switch between multiple tabs in the side panel. In a normal browser, I use Cmd+number to jump directly to a specific tab. Having to reach for the mouse in Codex interrupts that workflow.
Suggested behavior
- Make focus-aware
Cmd+number navigation optional, preserving the existing default behavior for users who prefer it.
- When enabled and focus is inside the side panel, route these shortcuts to that panel's tabs.
- When focus is outside the side panel, preserve the existing chat-navigation shortcuts.
- Keep the shortcuts working when an embedded browser page or its address bar has focus.
- Allow custom bindings for direct tab selection and next/previous tab navigation.
The key request is a keyboard-only way to navigate side-panel tabs, with shortcut behavior that follows the focused panel.
