With #1307 and https://tidyverse.org/blog/2025/12/tidymodels-xgboost/ we made sure that old and new versions of xgboost work with parsnip. We should look into fully deprecating the old support at one point once we have deemed that enough people have moved over. This means that adding some of the new features in will be easier.
and there are working versions of everything so if you really need the old version you can renv the packages.
I also think we should completely rewrite the xgboost helper functions we have, to fully take advantage of all the new features.
I'm thinking 6 months?
