Your Expectation
My save should have been saved normally, and all backups should also have been intact.
The Reality
I was playing normally from afternoon to night on September 10th, and shut down the game in the early morning of September 11th. However, when I loaded my saveworld again during daytime on September 11th, my save had rolled back to a state from some point in the afternoon of September 10th.
For context: I upgraded my 2.8.4 save to 2.9.0 Beta‑3 on September 9th. After the upgrade I played normally, entered and exited the world several times without any issues. I resumed playing around 16:00 on September 10, then shut down the game and my PC at about 4 AM September 11. When I opened the save the next day, the world had reverted to roughly 19:00 September 10.
At first I thought the game had simply loaded incorrect data. I checked the SU automatic backups folder and saw multiple backup entries, including timestamps around 4:00 September 11 and earlier points in time. I restored from the newest available backup, yet loading that backup still gave me the world state from ~19:00 September 10.
I inspected the 4:00 backup manually to investigate its contents. Core world files such as level.dat and region files like r.0.0.mca inside the backup had their latest modification times capped at 19:11 on September 10. Almost none of these core files bore modification timestamps from September 11. The only exception I found were files inside the playerdata folder which showed a 4:00 Sep‑11 timestamp; however this only affects player‑specific data, while 99% of the overall world state remained stuck at the 19:11 state.
JourneyMap appeared to hold partial progress: I explored new terrain and built structures there around 23:00 Sep 10, and JourneyMap correctly recorded this newly‑explored area on its map. But when I travelled to that location inside the game world, the terrain had reverted to its untouched original state as if I had never visited or built there, even though the map still showed my exploration.
I checked every SU backup one‑by‑one. All of these automatic backups had their core world files frozen at the 19:11 state. I had not noticed this before attempting restoration.
As a result, gameplay progress from this play session is genuinely lost and I currently have no way to recover it.
One relevant detail: My computer went to sleep sometime between 18:00‑19:00 Sep 10. From my memory, 19:11 might be the exact time I woke my PC from sleep. My hypothesis is that PC sleep interrupted the save or SU backup procedure. I have attempted to reproduce this bug, but I cannot reliably reproduce it. Root cause remains unknown for now.
Your Proposal
I would like to know what caused this issue, and I hope this bug can be identified and fixed.
