Standard TR-808 sub bass character. Smooth pitch sweep from ~3.5× the root frequency, clean sine wave core with a subtle 2nd harmonic. Use this as your baseline — sits well in almost any mix.
Front-loaded transient energy with a noise click at the attack. Pitch sweeps fast and hard. Great for trap hi-hats that need the kick and 808 to breathe in the same space.
Extended 2.5s tails with a slow amplitude decay — designed for melodic trap where the 808 carries the bassline. Layered 3rd and 4th harmonics keep it present in the mids.
Soft-clip saturation (tanh) gives this 808 bark and grit without aliasing. Cuts through heavily compressed mixes. Best used for 808s doubling the main hook.
Modelled after the original Roland TR-808 bass drum circuit. Slight LFO wobble (5.5Hz) adds analog warmth. Harmonic layering at 2× and 3× gives it body.
Pure sub, nothing more. Minimal harmonics, maximum low-end displacement. Built for rooms, cars, and speakers with proper woofers. Pair with a click layer if you need attack.
Five harmonic layers (fundamental through 5th harmonic) make this 808 audible even on earbuds. Fast pitch sweep. Use this when your sub is getting lost in a dense mix.
- Open the Sampler channel
- Drag any WAV into the sample slot
- Set root key to match file name (e.g.
_C2→ C2) - Enable "Pitch" knob to keep pitch locked on playback
- Drag WAV into a Drum Rack pad
- Right-click pad → Simpler
- Set Root Key in Simpler to match file name
- Use Clip Transpose to pitch to your track key
- Add an EXS24 / Sampler instrument
- Map each WAV to its corresponding MIDI note
- Or drag directly into the Audio Track timeline
- Load WAVs into your kit — assign each to a pad
- Tune pads to root key using the pad's semitone offset
- Use MIDI chord/note mode to trigger chromatic 808s live
- Sidechain your 808 to the kick drum using a compressor — this is the #1 thing separating amateur from pro 808 sound.
- Highpass your kick at around 80Hz so the 808 owns the sub frequencies exclusively.
- Pitch slides — automate the pitch of a Long or Classic 808 over 4–8 steps for that melodic glide effect.
- Layer a Bright 808 under a Sub 808 at -6dB for best of both worlds: mono sub energy + harmonic presence.
- Distorted 808s pair best with parallel compression — keep a dry copy in the chain.
- BPM-Synced files work best as one-shots on beat 1 — let the tail breathe into beat 2 naturally.
