Hi, I'm Yishai

I'm a software engineer interested in representing complex knowledge systems through software.

I currently work at Sefaria, building and maintaining software across backend services, APIs, web applications, and mobile applications for a for a digital corpus containing 5M+ text segments and 11,000+ text versions.

My interests include:

  • API design and developer infrastructure
  • Data modeling and information architecture
  • Text processing and knowledge representation
  • Building systems for complex, structured information

Background

Before becoming a software engineer, I spent years studying, editing, and working with Jewish texts. I hold a PhD in Political Science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, focusing on medieval Jewish political thought.

This background shapes how I approach engineering: I enjoy understanding complex domains, finding the right abstractions, and building systems that represent them clearly.

Selected work

  • Ref API — designed and implemented an API for navigating Sefaria's interconnected textual corpus.
  • Text APIs — worked on APIs supporting multilingual text experiences and structured access to textual data.
  • Text processing — built parsers and data transformations for complex textual editions (e.g. Rif with commentary linking).
  • BDB lexicon — reconciled multiple heterogeneous digitized sources into a unified lexicon import pipeline.
