GLM-5.2 in Context

An independent technical analysis (June 2026) comparing the open-weights model GLM-5.2 (Z.ai) to the proprietary frontier (Claude Opus 4.8, GPT-5.5, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Claude Fable 5). It covers standardized benchmarks, a blind multi-model creative-writing evaluation, capability by task type, censorship and privacy, local-inference viability on Apple Silicon, and inference economics.

Summary

GLM-5.2 is the strongest open-weights model to date and a genuine capability step, but frontier-adjacent rather than frontier-equal (Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v4.1: 51 versus Opus 4.8 at 56). It reaches near-parity on bounded coding while trailing on literary writing, long-horizon agentic work, long-context recall, and multimodality (it is text-only). Local self-hosting of the 744B model is gated by prefill throughput rather than memory. For mixed workloads, hybrid routing beats wholesale substitution, and a local-first hardware purchase is best deferred to the next Apple Silicon generation.

Method note

Benchmark figures attributed to model vendors are labeled as self-reported in the paper. Standardized index figures reflect the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v4.1 snapshot current in June 2026 and may move with later revisions. The creative-writing evaluation is reported in abstracted form; the underlying task material is withheld.
