In-App Glossary

The In-App Glossary provides contextual help for DOCSIS terminology directly on the dashboard. Small info icons appear next to key metrics and channel headers. Clicking an icon opens a popover with a plain-language explanation of what the value means and what ranges are good or bad.

How It Works

  • Click an info icon to open the popover
  • Click elsewhere, press Escape, or click the icon again to close
  • On mobile, the popover appears as a full-width bottom sheet

Only one popover is open at a time.

Covered Terms

Signal Metrics

Term Where Explanation
DS Power Metric card Downstream signal strength. Good: -4 to +13 dBmV. Too low = weak signal, too high = overdriven amplifier.
US Power Metric card Upstream transmit power. Good: 41-47 dBmV. High values mean the modem is working harder to reach the ISP.
SNR Metric card Signal-to-Noise Ratio. Good: above 33 dB (SC-QAM) or 40 dB (OFDM). Below 30 dB causes packet loss.
Errors Metric card Correctable (FEC) vs. uncorrectable (CRC) errors. Above 1% uncorrectable is critical.

Channel Technology

Term Where Explanation
SC-QAM Channel section header (DOCSIS 3.0) Traditional DOCSIS 3.0 technology using narrow 6-8 MHz channels.
OFDM/OFDMA Channel section header (DOCSIS 3.1) DOCSIS 3.1 technology with wide channels and thousands of subcarriers. Higher speeds but more sensitive to interference.

Additional Terms

Term Explanation
Modulation QAM level (e.g., 256QAM, 4096QAM). Higher = more data per signal. Lower = signal degradation.
DOCSIS 3.0 uses SC-QAM, 3.1 adds OFDM/OFDMA. Most modems use both simultaneously.
Gaming Index A-F grade for real-time gaming readiness based on latency, jitter, and packet loss.

Design

  • Icons are small (13px) and subtle -- they don't clutter the dashboard
  • Popovers are styled to match the current theme (dark/light)
  • Maximum width: 320px on desktop, full-width on mobile
  • All text is translated in all 4 languages (EN/DE/FR/ES)
