Multi-Tenant E-commerce with Database-Level Isolation in Medusa

Production-ready PostgreSQL Row Level Security (RLS) implementation for Medusa.js 2.x multi-tenant SaaS applications

Why Row Level Security?

When building multi-tenant SaaS applications, data isolation is critical. Traditional approaches have significant drawbacks:

How It Works

Request Flow

1. HTTP Request → x-tenant-id: "abc-123"
           ↓
2. Middleware → AsyncLocalStorage.run({ tenantId: "abc-123" })
           ↓
3. Patch → connection.query("SET app.current_tenant = 'abc-123'")
           ↓
4. Application → SELECT * FROM product;
           ↓
5. PostgreSQL RLS → Automatically adds: WHERE tenant_id = 'abc-123'
           ↓
6. Response → Only tenant "abc-123" data returned

Key Components

Component Purpose
Middleware Extracts x-tenant-id header, stores in AsyncLocalStorage
Patch Hooks into Knex, sets app.current_tenant session variable
Migration Creates RLS policies on all tables
Non-superuser Required! RLS is bypassed for PostgreSQL superusers

Setup & Installation

Step 1: Create Non-Superuser (Required!)

CRITICAL: RLS is bypassed for superusers. Use the seed script:

# Run as superuser (default DATABASE_URL)
yarn seed:rls-user

Troubleshooting

Problem: RLS not filtering (seeing all data)

Cause: Using PostgreSQL superuser.

# If usesuper = t, switch to medusa_app_user

Problem: No [RLS_PATCH] logs in server output

Cause: Patch not applied.

Problem: Migration fails

Cause: Running migration as non-superuser.

Important Notes

  1. Non-superuser required - RLS is bypassed for PostgreSQL superusers
  2. Patch applies to @medusajs/framework - Re-run yarn postinstall after updating dependencies
  3. Admin mode - Without x-tenant-id header, all data is visible (for admin dashboards)
  4. UUID format - Tenant IDs must be valid UUIDs
