About the PR

Rebalanced the items in the Trinkets loadout tab (some additions, some removals). Marked as draft until the roundstart equipment design doc is merged.

I'd also like to mention a distinct but related PR (#41264) that moves canes from the Trinkets tab to a new "Assistive items" tab.

Why / Balance

The roundstart equipment design doc is nearing completion, and #42423 has been opened already to work on implementing its additions in Medical, so I'm going to open some PRs for other things as well.

The decision to remove candles, lighters, smokables, and folders was made to match the design doc; "Trinkets are the non-clothing items available in a loadout. These are RP props used to establish a unique character, and should say something about your character's personality. They should not be used to shortcut finding readily available and common items (like cigarettes) or to give yourself an advantage with some special functionality."

In regards to the additions:

  • Wristwatches are essentially just cosmetic. They technically display a timer, but the PDA all characters spawn with already includes an even more specific timer, so they provide no special utility to players. Currently, they're only available as random maints loot or as a random spawn in the prison wardrobe.
    • The wristwatch does have a sell value of 50 spesos, which isn't a lot but it is more than other trinkets (other accessories and pride pins have a sell value of 10 spesos). I'm not super concerned about this (and pawning a cheap watch for money IS a classic trope), but if it's a concern we can just adjust the price of the watch to be more in-line with other trinkets.
    • I'll also note that the gold wristwatch (shinier, worth 500 spesos) is intentionally not included as a trinket here, and should be kept exclusively as mid-round loot.
  • We already have multiple different kinds of lizard plushies as trinkets, so adding additional plushies shouldn't be a concern. In any case, different characters would want to start with different kinds of plushies, especially since plushies tend to be an item people have more "attachment" to (i.e, you don't just want to grab a shark plushie from a wardrobe vendor, you want Roxie, your shark plushie who you take with you everywhere).
    • Plushies with highly unusual properties (e.g the bee plushie being grindable for buzzochloric bees, or the human plushie making realistic human screams, or the ghost soft toy having minimal friction and being able to "follow" players) are intentionally excluded here; the only plushies here are the ones of normal animals and of playable species.
    • I have had a PR to add more plushies closed in the past (Added more plushies to the Trinkets loadout menu #37379), but that was largely because the roundstart-items design doc was still being made at the time.

I'll note that removing existing trinkets that don't fit with the design doc is far more important here than adding new trinkets, so I'm willing to remove the new additions from this PR if necessary. That being said, it's probably better to add new options all at once that than to have a bunch of tiny future PRs that all need to be reviewed individually.

Technical details

  • Flower wreaths, hair flowers, and headphones are now grouped as "accessories".
  • Wristwatches have been added as a trinket option (under "accessories").
  • More plushies have been added as trinket options.
    • penguin plushie
    • blue shark soft toy
    • grey shark soft toy
    • pink shark soft toy
    • snake plushie
    • arachnid plushie
    • diona plushie
    • moth plushie
    • slime plushie
    • vox plushie
    • vulpkanin plushie
  • Some trinkets have been removed.
    • Candles
    • All lighters and smokables
    • All folders and clipboards

The removals are a shame (mostly the candles, though I doubt that many other people used them as a central character element, so it's understandable) and the additions are nice, wristwatches'll definitely be fun to have

I used them :(
Although not too helpful if also removing a lighter.
To me at least i feel far more normal adult people would be carrying a lighter on them than a stuffed animal. Although my own opinion is antithesis to the design intention in that I think there should just be a category of small vaguely useful items like box cutter knives, lighters, batteries, etc and you can choose one of them as a convenience to have. You can make roleplay out of anything, even being the sort of person that always has a screwdriver on them.

Sidenote but we really need to shrink the sprites so the loadout list entry isn't so big

I like the sprites being big since it makes it easier to tell what the trinkets actually look like. I wear glasses though.

I understand why the human plushie was excluded but adding every other plushie rubs salt in the wound
possible to add it later with a changed sound?

Possibly. The sprite is naked though so it might still be too cartoonish, I'm not sure. In any case that'd need to be its own PR.

Thought it does now occur to me that the vox plushie also screams, and we do have vox chittering sounds now. I might open a small PR to swap that sound effect out since it'd probably be a better fit.

I went through the human sounds and in a similar or even the same PR you could use the crying emote for the human plushie (Still comedic, doesnt convey emergency nearly as much, isnt super offputting) since humans dont have a similar chattering sound and laughing sounds slightly offputting to hear from a plushie
